Monteverdi 1610 Vespers on Thursday evening

April 27, 2010

Please join me and David Shuler’s magnificent Choir of St Luke’s this Thursday, April 29th at 8pm, when we’ll be performing “Vespro Della Beata Vergine”.  Tickets are available online at

The first truly large-scale masterpiece of Western music, Claudio Monteverdi’s monumental 1610 Vespers stands at the junction between Renaissance restraint and Baroque splendor. Sacred music but also high theatre, the dances and virtuosic vocal concerti, alternating with music in the “old style”, are performed with one singer per part, as we believe Monteverdi performed his own music.

For those of you who would like to learn more about Monteverdi’s beautiful work, there will also be a lecture at 7pm by Dr. Raymond Erickson of CUNY.

April 22, 2010

Hi everyone – Please join me and the other Holy Trinity Bach Choir and Players this Sunday, April 25, at 5pm for Bach Vespers at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Manhattan.  We’re featuring Cantata 12, Weinen, Klagen, Sorgen, Zagen (Weeping, Wailing, Worries, Woes).  I am also singing this great solo “Kreuz und Krone”.  You’ll love it!

There’ll be a Pre-Vespers talk with Michael Marissen, Professor of Music, Swarthmore College (enter side church door at the corner of 65th St and CPW), and there’ll be a reception afterwards.  Look forward to seeing you there!

Thanks to all of you who had the chance to join our program earlier this week at St Thomas.  The music was beautiful, and I had the special pleasure of having my visiting from England.  I’m now off to Dallas for another concert!
