What do the Rolling Stones and the Messiah have in common?

December 17, 2012

Because of the Trinity Choir, I have had a great couple weeks of music-making — singing with the Rolling Stones and singing in Handel’s Messiah!

I sang back up for the Rolling Stones on the 8th, 13th, and 15th. Check out this video of the concert at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, I’m at the 29 second mark!

I also sang Handel’s Messiah with the Trinity Choir and Baroque Orchestra at the Trinity Church on Wall Street on the 9th and at Alice Tully Hall, Lincoln Center, on the 12th. Our final performance is at Carnegie Hall on the 23rd. Please join us!

Meet my new green friend

November 2, 2012

Hurricane Sandy … not much to say that has not already been said. However, it is an opportunity to venture into new realms! Meet ‘Cain’ aka ‘Baby’ — we bonded  yesterday on the Upper West Side.

His owner is the fabulous violinist, Lara St. John.  Lara and I will be premiering five short duets entitled “Now Fatal Change”, written by the very talented Tarik O’Regan.  Our performance will be part of the Twelve Night Festival, which will take place on December 28, 2012 at Trinity Church on 79 Broadway, lower Manhattan.

Singing with the Trinity Choir & Baroque Orchestra

December 19, 2011

I absolutely love this time of the year and the wonderful music we get to perform.  Recently, I had the opportunity to sing, Handel’sMessiah” at Trinity Church with the Trinity Choir and Baroque Orchestra.  This piece was conducted by Julian Wachner and reviewed by Heidi Waleson of the “Wall Street Journal“.  Ms. Waleson had the following to say:

Take the alto aria “He was despised.” It can run 10 minutes or more, and feel endless its many repeats. But with subtle details, countertenor Ryland Angel and the Trinity violins, led by concertmaster Robert Mealy (who was key to the spirit of this performance), turned it into a nuanced picture of the Passion of Christ.”

And, “Part I began with a swinging overture and maintained sprightly tempi and bright colors throughout, befitting the optimism of its subject: the annunciation of the birth of Christ. “Oh thou that tellest” was a speedy, joyful exultation as Mr. Angel, the chorus, and the fierce violins threw themselves into its dancelike rhythms.”
